In two recently published scholarly works, Jung’s Studies in Astrology: Prophecy, Magic, and the Qualities of Time (Volume 1) and The Astrological World of Jung’s 'Liber Novus': Daimons, Gods, and the Planetary Journey (Volume 2), the psychological astrologer, Jungian Analyst and historian Liz Greene documents the profound impact Jung’s very individual understanding of astrology had on the entirety of his work. In particular, Dr. Greene demonstrates how Jung’s Liber Novus may be read as Jung’s confrontation with the archetypal energies constellated at the moment of his birth and as his journey through the symbols of his own astrological chart. Psychology and Religion: West and East, CW 11; Answer to Job
This seminar will focus on Jung’s seminal work, Answer to Job, found in Volume 11 of the Collected Works. In this work, Jung addressed the psychology of human suffering through the lens of the Biblical Book of Job. Through reading and discussion we will examine the symbolic role that theological concepts play in an individual’s psychic life and how the use of religious or mythological narrative is helpful in the treatment of, among other things, anxiety, depression, trauma and grief. We will also explore the concepts of good and evil and how those concepts come to be experienced psychologically by individuals in response to critical life events.

This seminar focuses on the first three lectures in Jung’s Vol.11, Psychology and Religion: West. Consideration will be given to understanding Jung’s ideas about the autonomy of the Psyche, his ideas regarding the nature of natural symbols, as well as their history and psychology. Candidates will learn the clinical relevance of this material as it relates to their understanding of their patients’ search for meaning and its relationship to depression. This seminar will consist of an in-depth reading of Jung’s essay, The Psychology of the Transference, from volume 16, The Practice of Psychotherapy. As stated in the Editorial Note “this paper is the only authoritative statement from his pen of the way in which the individuation process expresses itself in the transference.” The Rosarium Philosophorum images were used by Jung to formulate his view of the transference relationship.
