This seminar will meet six times over the course of the training year to read Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Jung devoted six years from 1934-1939 to a seminar on this text and said in the first meeting: “it is a hell of a confusion and extraordinarily difficult. I broke my head over certain problems; it will be very hard to elucidate this work from a psychological angle. However, we will try to do our best, but you must cooperate.” The “cooperation” I have in mind will be to engage the transcendent function through active imagination with the imagery of this text. In discussing Thus Spoke Zarathustra in his book, Ecce Homo, Nietzsche wrote: “The most powerful force of metaphor that has ever existed is poor and trivial compared with the return of language to the nature of imagery.”
