Dear friends,
Our Institute is in the fortunate position of being able to screen an extraordinary and innovative new documentary on Wednesday evening, May 1st, as part of its worldwide release on International Holocaust Memorial Day. Who Will Write Our History, from award-winning documentary writer, director, and producer Roberta Grossman and co-produced by Nancy Spielberg, is a powerful depiction of a little known episode of the resistance to the Nazi onslaught by residents of the Warsaw Ghetto.
In his review of the film, Douglas Davidson of Elements of Madness wrote: “It’s a film which focuses on a small band of individuals who found strength in defiance of Nazi control through the simple act of writing. By chronicling their lives—what they saw, what they felt, what they refused to become—within a secret archive dubbed “Oyneg Shabes” (the joy of Sabbath), they found a way to be remembered as more than victims, as people who resisted.”
The film movingly juxtaposes the depravity and the transcendence that we witness to this day in the repertoire of the human psyche. Narrated by Joan Allen and Adrien Brody, this documentary adaption of Sam Kassow’s book of the same name is amplified by moving dramatic performances of a stellar international cast. Who Will Write Our History has been shown and received awards at hundreds of major international film festivals, including the Berlinale Special. Its global screening partners include UNESCO and the USC Shoah Foundation.
Given our Institute’s roots in our founders’ flight from Nazi Germany, and given the ascendance of bigotry and hate crimes in our current zeitgeist, it’s particularly fitting for those of us deeply engaged with the dark and light in the human soul to be able to come together to watch and discuss the film.
Director Roberta Grossman has said about her project: “Which side of the story becomes the official narrative? Whose accounts do we elevate to the level of ‘truth,’ and whose de we ignore or even bury? What is real and what is fake? These are top-of-mind questions in 2018. They also preoccupied a courageous group of resistance fighters imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto in World War II.”
As soon as I saw this film in a nearly finished state, I knew I had to try to bring it to our community. Please join me in viewing the finished version in the Clubhouse at 7:30 p.m. on May 1st. It runs 95 minutes, and I’ll be honored to lead a discussion afterwards until we finish at 10:00. Analysts, candidates, interns, and staff may bring one family member.
