Description
In this lecture, Dr. Edward Edinger explores the vocation of depth psychotherapy and the historical traditions connecting depth psychotherapists with the past. According to Dr. Edinger, the vocation of depth psychotherapy, with its rise of the modern discovery of the empirical reality of the psyche, is unique to the 20th century. Depth psychotherapy is both an art and a science. Archetypal images underlying depth psychotherapy are the physician-healer, which represents healing knowledge applied to wounds and ills of humanity; the philosopher-scientist, which represents the figure having the scrutinizing capacity of rational, differentiated consciousness; and the priest-hierophant, who carries and mediates transpersonal knowledge of the gods and how to relate to them. Each one of these figures is constellated in the course of depth psychotherapy, and Dr. Edinger tells us how important it is to recognize them rather than identify with them.
