Description
Acclaimed lecturer and seminar leader, Betty M. Smith is Founder-Director of Poiesis, which for thirty years has offered seminars in a reflective mode engaging a Jungian perspective. Smith amplifies Greek myths through her written dialogues, which give them a decidedly contemporary voice.
Formerly a college lecturer in philosophy, she has taught in the Analyst Training Program of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles, participated on the faculty of Pacifica Graduate Institute on the island of Crete, and has lectured before many audiences in the United States, Switzerland, Portugal and Greece. her special delight is conducting mythology seminar tours to Greece in which the interior mythological journey parallels the outer one.
Reading from her narrative of the Greek myth of Io, Smith unfolds a profound feminine journey with problems and perceptions applicable to the contemporary psyche. More ancient than the myth of Psyche and Eros, the ordeals of Io present a complete paradigm for the development of feminine consciousness.
The presentation consists of alternating modes: Smith’s discussion of the archetypal theme followed by her reading of the narrative in dialogue. Using a form that is similar to active imagination as developed by Carl Jung, the narrative proceeds through conversations between principal figures of the story. With a faithful ear to the archetypal echoes in life’s events, the dialogues evoke the timeless landscape of the psyche in present time.
