This slide presentation will answer this intriguing question and feature other personalities discussed in my book The Jungian Strand in Transatlantic Modernism. We will begin with Jung’s first visit to New York, where he saw the Armory Show, an experience which took his creativity in a new direction. Twelve years later, Jung expanded his American horizons when he visited Taos in 1925 and met the Pueblo elder Mountain Lake. These trips, including his on-going correspondence with Mountain Lake, helped him to validate his theory of the collective unconscious. We will look at the ways in which Jung’s writings about the mytho-poetic nature of the psyche influenced such visionary American artists as Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock.
Jay Sherry, Ph.D., teaches history and psychology at Long Island University (Brooklyn). He has lectured and published widely. His books include Carl Gustav Jung, Avant-Garde Conservative and The Jungian Strand in Transatlantic Modernism.
