Description
This recording is a golden treasure of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles. The paper Dr. Von Franz presented so many years ago is remarkable for how it sets before us ideas about, and observations of, the psyche’s relation to the phenomenon of death that are surprising and profound. Dr. Von Franz carefully arrays the evidence for us, including dreams of people who were soon to die, as well as extensive amplifications from Egyptian mythology and from alchemy, to support her impression that the unconscious focuses on death for its role in the individuation process. The final twenty minutes of the lecture present implications about the psyche-matter interpenetration that are drawn from dreams, including her own, and the phenomena of the black hole used as a simile. Here Dr. Von Franz quotes from a letter by Jung to a Mr. Smythies (C.G. Jung Letters, Vol. 2, pages 43-47) regarding his discussion of “unextended intensity” and what we generally call the energy of the psyche.
