Physical Disability from a Wounded Healer’s Perspective
February 20, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Prepaid Cost: $25.00 – $40.00Event Navigation
Presented by Renata Ferraz Torres, M.D.
In this presentation, the archetype of the wounded healer will be discussed from personal, archetypal, and clinical perspectives. Diagnosed at age eight with familial spastic paraplegia, a disease which resulted in a physical disability, Torres brings a unique perspective to her work as a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst. Some of the topics to be addressed include the myth of the “neutral analyst”, the importance of diversity enabling the privilege of learning from differences, the “ableism” culture, and the necessity of embracing one’s unique characteristics in the process of individuation. This lecture will provide not only a perspective on physical disability but also on the vulnerability that lies in every analyst.
- Describe what is meant by the myth of the “neutral analyst” in terms of the transference counter-transference relationship;
- Describe some of the issues that can arise when the therapist has a visible physical disability and ways of addressing this in the context of clinical practice.
