Presented by Eve Maram, Psy.D.
This presentation, based upon Jungian analyst Eve Maram’s recent book, The Schizophrenia Complex (Chiron, 2022), focuses on the ways in which the thoughts and feelings constellated by encounters with what we call schizophrenia can become a complex. Whether one has the symptoms of schizophrenia or is in a relationship with someone who has schizophrenia, experiencing the impact of the feelings and emotions generated by the unconscious can feel both overwhelming and chaotic. Drawing from personal material and the collective and archetypal aspects of an encounter with the chaos of the unconscious, we will examine the healing power of Eros as a force of hope and connection.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe what is meant by a complex and how it shapes behavior
- Give an example of how the thoughts and feelings we have in response to someone who is experiencing a schizophrenic episode can develop into a complex
- Give an example of how Eros can be utilized in the therapeutic context as a source of hope and connection and serve as a form of containment.
Eve Maram is a clinical and forensic psychologist and a certified Jungian Analyst in private practice in Orange, California. She is a member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts (IRSJA), the C.G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe, and the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). She has authored two books, Psychopathy Within (Chiron, 2016) and The Schizophrenia Complex (Chiron, 2022), as well as several book chapters and journal articles.
