Psychology and Religion: West and East, CW 11; Answer to Job
This seminar will focus on Jung’s seminal work, Answer to Job, found in Volume 11 of the Collected Works. In this work, Jung addressed the psychology of human suffering through the lens of the Biblical Book of Job. Through reading and discussion we will examine the symbolic role that theological concepts play in an individual’s psychic life and how the use of religious or mythological narrative is helpful in the treatment of, among other things, anxiety, depression, trauma and grief. We will also explore the concepts of good and evil and how those concepts come to be experienced psychologically by individuals in response to critical life events.
