Learning Objectives:
Describe what is meant by the creation complex, Jung’s concept of creativity as an autonomous complex
Give an example of the destructive vs creative aspects of the creation complex
Describe some of the similarities and key differences between artistic creation vs pathology and how to differentiate between these in clinical practice.
Irene Cioffi Whitfield, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst and art historian in private practice in London. A member of The Independent Group of Analytical Psychologists in London as well as the Jungian Psychoanalytic Association in New York City, Irene received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts specializing in 18th Century Italian painting. Her work focuses on the intersection of art and psychology, especially the dangerous dynamics of the creative process. She has lectured internationally on the life and work of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
