My control work involved a patient who was seen by the collective as successful, attractive, and full of potential but felt like a failure. She had vast wealth but felt unworthy to use her inherited resources. Her devouring mother left her feeling as if she had nothing, and no matter how much success she achieved she was always hungry for more of what could never truly nourish her. My control patient, as will be illustrated by her initial dream, was unable to contain herself.
In the forum I will discuss how my uncontained patient initially needed me to be her container and how this necessitated the confrontation of my own devouring mother complex. I will illustrate the deep unconscious connections between the patient and myself and how it came to light by way of numerous synchronistic events. I will illustrate, by way of the patient’s dream material, how she slowly began the process of integrating lost parts of her self. The work with this patient was truly as Jung described in Psychology of the Transference, para. 358, “When two chemical substances combine, both are altered, this is precisely what happens in the transference.”
Learning Objectives:
This presentation is designed to help you:
- Identify envy in the transference.
- Describe the effect of the analyst’s complex on the analysis.
