A Modern Fairytale of Love and the Other

Prepaid Cost: $30.00 – $35.00Event Navigation
Presented by Thuy Bui, Ph.D.
Love in the sense of concupiscentia is the dynamism that most infallibly brings the unconscious to light. – C.G. Jung – Transformation Symbolism in the Mass.
This presentation will explore the symbolic and mythological representations of love and the “other” and their collective manifestations as seen through the lens of Guillermo Del Toro’s modern-day fairy tale of eros, horror, and whimsy, The Shape of Water. We will explore how loneliness and loss shaped the lives of the main protagonists in the film, and how only through the significant act of falling in love they could transcend their fear and suffering in an otherwise hopeless situation. As seen in the film, this presentation is an invitation to find compassion, understanding, and even love for the “other” when we embrace our ability to transform fear in our darkest moments.
