Jung named the different aspects of ourselves that we show the world the persona. In this workshop we will discuss the concept of the persona, how it develops to protect the more vulnerable parts of the personality, when is it used as a form of protection, as well as its defensive and protective aspects. Using painting as a form of active imagination, participants will have the opportunity to amplify their personal understanding of the persona both in its defensive, as well as the more vulnerable parts of the self that lie beneath its protective layer. No artistic skills or previous painting experience is required.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe what is meant by Jung’s concept of the persona;
- Describe positive and negative aspects of the persona in terms of relationship to self and others;
- Describe what is meant by Jung’s concept of the term shadow;
- Give an example of how the shadow can manifest in inter and intra-personal relationships;
- Describe what is meant by the term active imagination;
- Describe when active imagination is appropriate and when it is contra-indicated in working with patients;
- Describe how symbolic material can be expressed through painting images and how to utilize this approach with patients;
- Describe how painting symbols from the unconscious can help patients find a relationship to difficult affective states;
- Give an example of how painting symbols from the unconscious can be helpful during times of emotional transition;
- Give an example of how symbolic images can evolve over a period of time.
