“No individuation can take place without the body…It is the spirit of this particular body, and it is this particular body that makes this thing particular.” Jung, 1088, p.64
BodyDreaming brings out attention to our body’s innate capacity for self-regulation, which is fundamental to our physical and mental health. Findings in Neuroscience in the past 20 years have confirmed the principle of self-regulation that is a fundamental building block in Jungian psychology. Jung saw the psyche’s regulatory ability as a mirror of the self-regulating capacity that operates in the body.
Our therapy trainings have largely focused on Psyche as guide in the individuation process. It is now imperative that we attend to a more integrated approach that includes the body’s healing role as we address the crises facing the world post pandemic, the global unrest of war, migration and climate catastrophes.
BodyDreaming offers us an approach to working with trauma that integrates the body and psyche. It is rooted in Jungian psychology, in an understanding of the Nervous System and the practice of somatic therapy.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the principles of self-regulation in both body and psyche, referencing recent findings in neuroscience.
- Describe the role of the body in Jung’s concept of individuation, and its implications for clinical practice.
- Assess how body-inclusive therapies can address traumas on both a personal as well as collective level (e.g. responses to the pandemic, wars, environmental issues).
Marian Dunlea, M.Sc., IAAP, ICP, a Jungian analyst and Somatic practitioner, has been teaching and leading workshops internationally for the past 30 years integrating body and soul. She is creator of BodyDreaming®, an embodied practice, and is director and teacher of the BodyDreaming Training Programme. She is head of the BodySoul Europe training programme, sister organization of the Marion Woodman Foundation, where she is core faculty. With the development of her unique approach BodyDreaming®, Marian incorporates developments in neuroscience, trauma therapy, attachment theory with Jungian psychology, and the phenomenological standpoint of interconnectedness. Her book, BodyDreaming in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma – an Embodied Therapeutic Approach, won the Gradiva Award for best book, 2019, with NAAP – National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and was Co-Winner of The International Association for Jungian Studies, Best Book award 2019.
