Modern civilization is losing its relationship with nature. We are no longer familiar with the gestation cycles of the plants and animals that surround us, the phases of the moon, or the seasons. We have lost our intimacy with the elements and our connection to the world we live in. For 40 years Miguel has been participating in and leading earth-based ceremonies to work with Veterans, youth, people in recovery, and those interested in the old ways of connecting more deeply with nature. Drawing from our relationship to Psyche and the unconscious, Miguel utilizes poetry, mythology, and earth-based rituals as a means of inviting people out of the confining spirit of our times and into the spirit of the depths. In this workshop, he will describe how this process has successfully addressed serious issues we face in our time, such as racism, addiction, suicide, mass incarceration, and alienation.
Learning objectives
- Give an example of how a native-based ceremony can be helpful for people dealing with feelings of loss and alienation.
- Give an example of how a native-based ceremony can be utilized for people dealing with issues of addiction and/or PTSD.
Miguel Rivera, is a musician, mentor, teacher, minister, and poetry translator. Miguel sees the world and its inhabitants from many perspectives, including his childhood home in Guatemala that was part hospital and clinic, working as an E.R. orderly, agricultural worker, touring and recording musician, cab driver in L.A., supervising sound editor for film and T.V., mentor and retreat leader for at-risk youth, veterans, first responders, and civilians. Miguel has had 4 bilingual anthologies published of the Maya K’iche’ poet Humberto Ak’abal: Poems I brought down from the mountain (U.S., 2001), Tejiendo las huella (Uruguay, 2006), “El animalero” Guatemala 2008, and In the Courtyard of The moon, (Tia Chucha Press, U.S. 2021).
