Puella’s Shadow

The joyous, intense energy of the Puella, while appealing, often masks a more fragile personality; unrealistic, fantasy driven, easily dissembled, immature, and untouched. The wounds of the Puella, stemming from early losses, particularly by the masculine, can manifest in body numbing, distorted self-image, and difficulty with intimacy. She lives an ‘as if’ life, bolstered by a persona adaptation, often overtly youthful in appearance, but blocked from her basics instincts, be it food, love, emotion, or anything to do with feeling. Living in the psychology of the masculine, the journey towards embracing a deeper connection to a more embodied feminine self, while fraught with uncertainty, can lead to healing and a sense of greater integration and wholeness.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the personality characteristics of the Puella in terms of her relationship with the father, particularly in terms of early loss and psychological development;
- Identify characteristics of the Puella in terms of her relationship to herself and others;
- Describe how the personality characteristics of the Puella prevent her from accepting normal aging.
Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst and clinical psychologist in private practice in Phoenix, Arizona. She has lectured at several Jungian conferences in the US and abroad. Susan has published several journal articles in Plath Profiles, International Journal of Jungian Studies, as well as chapters in several books on Jungian analytical psychology, focusing on the ‘as if’ personality, fathers and daughters, auto-immunity and Julia Kristeva.
