Series: Reading Persian Sufi Poetry through the lens of Jungian Psychology
Presented by Sherri Mahdavi, Ph.D. 3 Tuesdays: February 9, 16, 23, 2021 - 7:00 - 9:00 pm Don’t surrender your loneliness so quickly Let it cut more deep Let it ferment and season you - Hafiz I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the Astonishing Light of your own Being! – Hafiz In this seminar, we will read poems by Persian mystic Sufi poets such as Attar, Rumi, Saadi, and Hafiz. We will consider the sheer power of insight these poets possessed in understanding human experiences and the structure of the psyche. Exploring the deeper symbolic meaning of these poems will reveal how the Sufis’ wisdom about the internal workings of the psyche parallels Jungian psychological understanding of the individuation process. Sherri Mahdavi, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst and clinical psychologist in private practice in Irvine. She also serves as an associate professor of applied clinical psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Southern California, where she teaches courses in depth psychology.
