DESCRIPTION:Presented by Sam Kimbles\, Ph.D. \n“What if your worst fears are the story of our time”? — Naomi Lowinsky \nDuring these times of social and political upheavals\, the cultural unconscious manifests in expressions and enactments of chronic and historic racial injustices\, political polarizations\, the global pandemic\, global warming\, social media\, and a multitude of other national and international political and cultural problems (which I named “Cultural Complexes”). These processes carry the phantom narratives of our collective legacies\, ghosts\, histories\, and intergenerational traumas. How can the understandings we glean from these processes help us to see\, hold and engage with the extreme collective emotional states that are expressed and that confront us in plain sight? What are their clinical implications? \n\n\n\nMy focus during this talk will be on working and experiencing “within” the cultural veil to both understand and process the spirit of the times.\n\n\n\nLearning Objectives \n\nGive two examples of forms of privilege that contribute to a lack of awareness of the impact of cultural processes on analytic work.\nDescribe three common positions that function to express emotional valances in a political and/or social situation\nThrough the lenses of the victim\, the perpetrator and the bystander\, discern and describe similarities and differences between these modes of thinking.\n\nDr. Sam Kimbles is a Jungian analyst and clinical psychologist\, in private practice in San Francisco  He is a past-President of the C.G Institute of San Francisco where he serves on the faculty\, in addition to being a clinical professor (VCF) in the Department of Family and Community Medicine\, University of California\, San Francisco. Author of The Cultural Complex:  Contemporary Jungian Perspectives on Psyche and Society (Singer & Kimbles\, eds.)\,  Phantom Narratives: The Unseen Contributions of Culture to Psyche\,  his most recent book: Intergenerational Complexes in Analytical Psychology (2021) explores the themes of psyche in groups and society.  He has presented papers related to the theory and practical applications of analytical psychology both nationally and internationally\, and his work on the Cultural Complex has contributed significantly to understanding groups\, organizations and culture through the application of analytical psychology.
