Jung \nIn this series of seminars we will  examine Jung’s concept of the Shadow\, the aspects of ourselves that we view as negative\, often repress\, devalue\, and which can have the effect of making us feel inferior\, worthless\, and primitive\, in comparison to our ego ideal.  Utilizing case material\, we will focus on how the shadow aspect of our personality\, when unintegrated and unconscious\, can gain dominance over our lives\, leading to potentially destructive and harmful behavior. We will discuss how to recognize when a patient is identified with or defensively enacting aspects of their shadow\, and how to best address this within the context of the therapeutic relationship. \nLearning objectives: \n\nDescribe what is meant by the term Shadow in analytical psychology\nDescribe the defensive aspect of the shadow\nDescribe how the defenses of projection and projective identification serve to protect the ego from feelings of helplessness\, inferiority\, and self-doubt\nDescribe what is meant by the term shadow projection\nGive an example of a shadow projection in the context of the transference relationship\nDescribe the defensive aspect of idealization as a type of shadow projection\nDescribe how the defenses of triumph and superiority protect the ego from feelings of self doubt and inferiority\nGive an example of what inhibits a patient being able to integrate aspects of their shadow\n\nSherri Mahdavi\, Ph.D.\, is a Jungian analyst and clinical psychologist in private practice in Irvine.
