Gordon Nelson\, Ph.D. \nArchetypal images lie at the core of the depth and breadth of psychological practice. An ability to identify and experience the energy of the archetype\, as well as its power and structure\, is an essential element in the communication and intensity of the connection between the patient\, the therapist\, and the world they live in.  In this workshop and lecture we will look at differences between personal complexes and the archetypal images that unite\, inform\, and so often unconsciously dominate our human behavior and guide our thoughts. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe what is meant by the term individuation and why this archetype is a crucial part of the analytic process.\nIdentify a complex with its archetypal core\, and instinctual energy.\nDescribe how to differentiate between an ego identification\, a complex\, and an archetype.\nDescribe what is meant by the unconscious aspect of the personality and how an instinct can interfere with our capacity to tolerate conflict.\nGive an example of how dream analysis can support the process of individuation.\nDescribe one way a person might know he or she is caught in a complex;   Give an example of how an archetype can manifest in a dream.\n\nGordon Nelson\, Ph.D.\, is a Jungian analyst and educational psychologist in Santa Monica. He has taught the complete C. G. Jung Collected Works Reading Program many times\, as well as many individual training courses on Jung at the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles\, and at other professional psychology graduate schools. He is a past president of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles and former Chair of its Certifying Board for new analysts.
