Psyche’s Response to the Intersections of Cultural Complexes:
Mexican-American Male Identity Formation
March 7, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Prepaid Cost: $35Event Navigation
Presented by John Valenzuela, Ph.D.
This talk will discuss some of the psychological challenges of living with a bi-ethnic identity, and some of the ways in which the collective psyche compels individuals to split the values and attitudes between their cultural heritage and the dominant culture identity. Dream images and symbols which reflect the unconscious response to these messages will be addressed, as they relate the dramatic archetypal fuel of the male Mexican-American experience. There will be time the audience will be invited to turn towards healing, and discuss how the co-ordination of identity, culture, dreams and symbols can potentiate a healing narrative that constitutes an indigenous way of knowing.
Course Objectives:
- Describe some of the psychological challenges of living with a bi-ethnic identity.
- Describe clinical interventions which may help a patient unify their experience of a bi-ethnic identity.
