Presented by Jacob Zighelboim, M.D.
Respondent: Robert Moradi, M.D.
By framing humanity’s “fall from grace” in terms of man’s base, evil-inclined nature we have accepted the idea that it was (still is) our destructive nature that has caused us so much suffering. In this presentation, we will follow the evolution of our Hebrew ancestors efforts to overcome suffering and regain the paradisiacal life God had intended for us. The talk will also offer a new iteration of the Garden of Eden Story, one that celebrates rather than condemns our humanity and affirms that we suffer not because we are flawed, bad individuals, but because we are human.
Course Objectives:
- Give two examples of how previous generations attempted to relieve psychological suffering.
- Give an example of what types of behavior and attitude promotes psychological well-being.
- Reframe the Garden of Eden story from the perspective of compassion for the flawed aspect of humanity.
- Give an example of why this attitude is critical in psychological development.
