Authentic Movement: Days of Awe
Wendy Wyman-McGinty, Ph.D

Authentic movement is a form of active imagination in which attention is given to the somatic unconscious, the unconscious as it is experienced and expressed through the body. Working alone and in dyads, we will explore the relationship between mover and witness, with particular emphasis on the role of attunement and kinesthetic empathy as a means of understanding the experience of the mover. The Days of Awe refer to the 10 day period between Rosh Hashanah (New Year) and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). This period is marked by introspection, acknowledging lapses in thought and deed, asking forgiveness for those we’ve harmed (including ourselves), and moving from resentment towards reparation. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. Held at the Lycee next door to the Institute. Registration limited to 25.

The Power of Companionship: The Psychology of the Brother-Sister Relationship
Lara Newton, M. A., L. P. C.

The foundation for a new psychological perspective on the brother-sister relationship will be explored externally, in terms of inter-personal and cultural relationships, and internally, in the relationship between the conscious and unconscious, the masculine and the feminine. The process of transformation, from bonding to wounding, and finally to healing and redemption, takes the brother-sister relationship from an outer experience, whether negative or positive, to a powerful intra-psychic reality, on a personal and archetypal level.

Projection and Identification in the Service of Awakening:
Visualization Practices in the Buddhist Tradition
Michele Daniel, Ph.D.

Projection and identification are often used to delineate negative processes that one“should’ overcome. However, Jung tells us that it is only through projection that we first encounter that which is unconscious to us. Buddhist meditation teachers fully understood these natural processes of the mind and made use of them to guide students into a relationship with positive aspects of the collective unconscious that would result in the integration of these aspects into their conscious personalities. In this two lecture series, the first presentation will consider these processes; through an experiential exploration of specific Buddhist Visualization meditation practices, examine how this integration takes place. Bring your journal… dress comfortably.

A Series : The Religious Nature of the Psyche
Life, Death, Rebirth:
A Guided Journey through the Tibetan Book of the Dead
Michele Daniel, Ph.D.

Jung believed it was essential to formulate an image of what happened after death, as such images are generated by the self. One of the most complete formulations of what happens after death is found in the Tibetan Book of the Dead and it is reported that Jung carried a copy of this text in his "back pocket" for years. We will review Jung's considerations regarding the image of rebirth and view a film narrated by Leonard Cohen on the The Great Liberation. The film demonstrates how the Tibetan Book of the Dead is currently utilized in Tibet during and after the dying process to facilitate the journey though the bardo between life and rebirth. We will close with a discussion of the role projection and de-identification plays in the bardo between death and re-birth and a brief meditation practice. Although the two lectures by Daniel are designed to follow one another, each stands on its own as a separate entity.

Psychic Messages to Jung and Einstein
Joyce Burt, M.A.

Inspirational images emerged from Jung and Einstein in 1905 while Jung was in Zurich and Einstein was in Berne in the same part of the world. These very different people responded to expressions from the unconscious through night and day dreams. They were both scribbling scientific formulas and dream images that eventually took flight in entirely different and powerful ways. This evening will be a conversation/discussion about these synchronistic events based on Jung's autobiography, Memories, Dreams and Reflections, and the recent biography, Einstein by Walter Isaacson.

A Theory of Soul and Spiritual Practice
Rabbi Mordecai Finley, Ph.D.

Drawing from Kabalistic and Chasidic sources, Rabbi Finley will outline ideas about the soul, and especially about the destructive dimensions in human nature that interfere with the soul’s natural drives. Notions of the “whole person” or “master of the soul” will be presented, as well as spiritual practices that guide and shape this work. Rabbi Finley will also show how he integrates both archetypal and cognitive psychology into his own teachings on Jewish spiritual theory and practice.

Some Homosexualities and the Religious Function
Barry Miller, Ph.D.

The religious function pursues meaning embedded in our experience. When this pursuit utilizes our sexualities, very often confusion, intense polarizations, and even death may be provoked in the individual and in the culture outside. Sexualities conceptualized as “homosexual” seem to stimulate a particular intensification of this disturbance, challenging the ways we think, the ways we maintain faith, and the ways in which we analyze. This talk will reflect on re-perceiving erotic constellations in the context of the religious function, where revelation of the psyche is possible within these most perplexing experiences.

The Patriarcal Sexual Legacy
Brad TePaske, Ph.D.

From Paul, to Augustine, to Benedict XVI, Christianity's attitude toward sex and gender constellates a fundamental denial of both human and archetypal realities. Mythological reflections on Eros and the Underworld, Aphrodite and Sophia, and the religious aspects of sex and erotic love will be explored as a counterpoint to moralism, misogyny, and an obsessive will-to-power, characteristic of the patriarchal sexual legacy.

The Analytic Psychological Club presents:
A Journey to Middle Earth
Steven Galipeau, MA, M.Div.

This lecture series explores the symbolism of the images that populate J. R.R. Tolkien's mythic tales set in Middle Earth, in particular The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Why do these stories and their characters continue to capture our imagination? What inspired Tolkien? How do we understand this modern myth in the light of depth psychology?
` The first evening will set the stage with observations about the man who created these stories and some of his influences. We will look at The Hobbit and examine some of its characters and themes and how it subtly sets the stage for The Lord of the Rings. Each subsequent lecture will focus on one of the three books that make up the ring trilogy. We will examine such diverse themes as Tolkien as an early environmentalist, the pros and cons of Peter Jackson's film version of his work, and Tolkien's unique gift as story teller and myth maker.

An Exploration of Divination and Active Imagination
Michele Daniel, Ph.D.

Oracular tools form a bridge to the collective unconscious and can help us form a profound personal connection to the depths. In our time together we will explore ways to develop an ongoing relationship to the collective unconscious beginning with some of Jung's thoughtsdivination and synchronicity. We will consider the utilization of specific divination tools and the elaboration of oracular messages into life-long guidance through active imagination. Several forms of divination will be explored, including the I Ching and Shining Tribe Tarot. Please bring your journal and dress comfortably. Light refreshments will be provided.

Living your Unlived Life:
The Myth of Castor and Pollux
Jerry Ruhl, Ph.D.

Drawing upon the myth of the twin stars in the constellation Gemini, this workshop explores the unity that exists behind every duality. The ancient Greek myth of Castor and Pollux has extraordinary wisdom and relevance for us today. Unified in their childhood, this pair came to be separated, fragmentary, and miserable. One is mortal, the other divine. Only after much struggle are they reunited in heavenly embrace. Dr. Ruhl will present this timeless story as a prototype and navigation point for all humans who are on the journey into wholeness. When, through the art of active imagination, we allow both sides of any issue to exist in equal dignity and worth, not as compromise, but as synthesis, we embrace paradox and achieve greater awareness and meaning.

Jung on Active Imagination
J. Gordon Nelson, Ph.D.

Active imagination is the way we encounter the unconscious as living and aware beings. Jung’s writings on active imagination are dispersed throughout the twenty volumes of his Collected Works, but many have been collected for us in this volume edited by Joan Chodorow. This will be a workshop class in which the participants will be encouraged to engage with the material, integrating theoretical understanding with clinical applications. For the first class, each person will need a copy of Jung on Active Imagination, (in the Encountering Jung series, Princeton University Press, 1997). Please read the Introduction and Chapter One before the first meeting.

Making Sense of Loving Relationships
James Hollis, Ph.D.

No theme seems to pre-occupy us more than the desire for loving relationships, yet everywhere we see how broken they can become. In this lecture we will explore the dynamics of our hidden agenda for our intimate relationships and the search for the "Magical Other". We will consider the difference between being in love and loving, and how the best relationship that we can achieve with the intimate "Other" grows out of the relationship we achieve with ourselves.

Navigating the Second Half of Life
James Hollis, Ph.D.

For many, midlife is a time of change and disruption, so much so, that we use the term "crisis" to describe it. Alternating between presentation, discussion, and writing, we will examine some of the forces that brought us to where we are today. We will examine the collision between our natural self and our adaptive self, as we consider the patterns in our lives, differentiating our conscious values from our habits and complexes, and move towards creating a meaningful spirituality which allows for greater expression of depth, purpose, and direction in our lives.

The Way of the Small: Why Less is truly More
Michael Gellert, LCSW

“The goal is to make the ego as strong and as small as possible.” C. G. Jung

Our best traditions and thinkers tell us that happiness is found in “the small”—in celebrating the details of everyday life and living wisely with limits. They teach us the joys of simplicity and modesty, and that by embracing diminishing experiences, we can make our suffering sacred. By promoting a sound, wholesome existence for both the individual and society, this perennial teaching offers a viable alternative to the grandiose thinking that is responsible for so many of our personal and global problems. In exploring this archetype of the small, our aim will be to understand why very little is needed to be happy.

Orpheus and Eurydice in Myth, Art, and Individuation
Brad TePaske, Ph.D.

Orpheus, whose exquisite lute playing protected the Argonauts from the call of the Sirens and who bravely ventured to the Underworld to bringback his bride Eurydice from the dead, suffered a double loss. Successful in his quest, but so filled with longing, he was unable to resist looking back to see that Eurydice was right behind him, he lost her again to the world of the dead. Murdered and dismembered by the Maenads, his bones gathered by the Muses, we find that his gentle spirit evokes a call of individuation for those who understand the depths.
