The Archive for Research in
Archetypal Symbolism (ARAS) is part of a national
collection of photographs, slides and descriptive
material selected for their significant symbolic content.
The Archive assists in the research and study of ancient
and modern symbols throughout the world. ARAS is a unique collection of pictures and scholarship devoted to the study of symbolic imagery. The Archive consists of photographs of art, ritual images and artifacts organized chronologically and cross-indexed, with each picture mounted and accompanied by a text prepared by professional researchers and consultants. The 10,000-image core Archive is particularly strong in prehistoric, ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Christian art and is now being expanded (with an eye to eventual access to the images on laser disk) to include Asian, Jewish, Islamic, African, Oceanic, and Native American imagery. The library can xerox ARAS items for $1.00 (one image and its documentation), or prepare slides for $3.50. For publication purposes it is necessary to contact ARAS in New York for permissions: ARAS, 28 East 39th St., New York, NY 10016; telephone: (212) 697-3480. ARAS research can be conducted by appointment only through the Max and Lore Zeller Library. (Graphics on this page from www.aras.org.) |
